CNN Underscored, a trusted source for hands-on product testing, reviews, and guides, recently published an article on the benefits of Bakuchiol. Here’s what Sytheon’s CEO has to say about it.
What Is Bakuchiol?
Bakuchiol is a natural skin-care ingredient that continues to create a buzz in the news – and for good reason. As explored in CNN Underscored’s article, “What is bakuchiol? Experts explain the skin care benefits of the retinol alternative,” Bakuchiol provides the same skin brightening and smoothing benefits as retinol without the negative side effects.
Bakuchiol has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that help to calm and restore skin. Unlike retinol, Bakuchiol is safe to use on sensitive skin because it won’t cause dryness or irritation. Thanks to these benefits, more and more skin care companies are adding Bakuchiol to their products.
Sytheon’s Response
Sytheon is a research-backed developer of high-performance active ingredients for the personal care industry. One of its most popular ingredients is Sytenol® A, which is 99%+ pure Bakuchiol.
“[The CNN article] shows people are keeping an eye on the Bakuchiol trend,” says Sytheon CEO and President Dr. Ratan K. Chaudhuri. “Now, everybody knows Bakuchiol and everybody knows it’s the true alternative to retinol. Although retinol works, it has a wide range of side effects, including irritation and sensitization. You can’t use it during the day, and some people can’t use it at all.”
Bakuchiol, on the other hand, is a well-defined ingredient that can be used by anyone at any time. However, Dr. Chaudhuri stresses that not all Bakuchiol is created equal. He urges skin care companies to look for well-defined Bakuchiol that’s backed by science, to ensure it’s safe for consumers.
“Use Bakuchiol that’s well-defined,” says Dr. Chaudhuri. “It should have analytical, clinical studies and regulatory approvals to show it’s a quality ingredient.”
Does Bakuchiol Come From an Endangered Plant?
There is one misconception about Bakuchiol that Dr. Chaudhuri wants the world to know, and it has to do with sustainability. Bakuchiol comes from the babchi plant, also known as Psoralea corylifolia, Cullen corylifolium, or Bu Gu Zhi. Some people believe that the babchi plant is endangered, but Dr. Chaudhuri says that’s not the case.
“The babchi seed grows in many different countries, including China, India, and Pakistan,” says Dr. Chaudhuri. “It’s estimated that less than 10 percent of the available babchi seeds in the world are used to make Bakuchiol.”
For further proof, Dr. Chaudhuri points to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, which includes endangered animal, fungi and plant species. The babchi plant is not on this list.
